If your clutch "has gone" you partially or totaly lose drive to the rear wheels, which I'm guessing is not the problem you have.
Your problem is most likely to be one with the clutch operating hydraulics.
Was the clutch fluid resevoir empty?

If it was empty, air will have got into the system, and it won't have a hope of working until the air is bled out!
This will be a pointless exercise , however, until you find where the original fluid leaked out.

My fluid was always runing out. The problem was my clutch master cylinder was f##t. This is located by the cluch peddle. Got a new one, filled up fluid & had to bleed out the air from the cylinder located on the gearbox.
