The E34 I bought for an M50 conversion is in better condition than I first thought - it's got a Bilstein suspension kit fitted which lowers it about 30mm that the seller didn't mention - and I may keep it and look for another one for the conversion.
There is a problem in that when the offside front wheel hits a speed bump or pothole the suspension crashes into it as if it's bottoming out. There's little suspension movement compared with a standard one, but the ride height is about the same side-to-side. The ride is well-damped and the suspension joints all appear to be in good condition. I'll strip the strut down next week but thought I'd ask opinions first. I think it could be the top mount??

Sounds like the top mount to me. Check the steering rack arms for play if you can't find anything wrong with the suspension.

I changed the top mount but it made no difference. Substituting the stut for another cured the problem so the Billie will go for rebuilding.
cheers
