will not start when hot

I have an 1984 323i. When the temperature gets above 35 degrees centigrade it does not like to start. It does not kick over at all. i just get an odd sound. after various attempts it usualy starts. Once the temperature gets down below 35 it is happy to start first time. any theories as to what is going on?
