I'm thinking of buying a set of rims for my E30 Convertible but the only size wheels that they have in the style I want is 17x7.5 4x100. The only problem is that the offset is 45 (and as we all know on an E30 the offset is 15-25! (Barsketts!!!!!)

Anyway, can any of you fine people tell me how I can get them to fit comfortably even if I have to use spacers. And if I do can you tell me the size spacer I'll need (and how you calculated that!)

Many thanks,

An unhappy man. :(

Spacer is easy

45 - 15 = 30 or

45 - 25 = 20

there is your answer.

You will need a hub centric spacer and long bolts.

Personally I would not do it because the strain on the bolts.

I don't agree with the previous comment !!!!!!!!!

i have 15mm sacers on a 840 with longer bolts, absolutly no problems so i wonder how these guys can make statments without probably never having used spacers and longer bolts, surely the manufacturers have done there sums and sorted the stress issues. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Parksie, how much longer are the new bolts than the originals did you have to use? And in your opinion has it had any negative effects?

Thanks.

Hi mate

There absolutly No issues.

The bolts are exactly the thickness of your choosen spacer thickness , any longer and you would have problems such as a too long bolt would possibly catch on things such as rear brake shoes or bearings etc

Do not be put off, try wheelsuk, they will supply any type of spacer or bolt or hub centric ring.

Or don't use the ones that require longer bolts.

I have 20mm spacers and about et 45 wheels on my 323i but they are the spacers that bolt to the hub with the normal bolts and then have 4 studs that stick out for the wheel to fit on. The spacer really just becomes part of the hub and the studs make it easier to put the wheel on than the normal bolts.

My wheels fit like they were made for the car and I have had no problems after a year of motorsport, track days and normal road driving. Just make sure you check that the spacers are done up as well as the wheels every now and then, although mine have never been loose.

Longer bolts shouldn't be subject to any greater loads than shorter ones. The bolts are only in tension. The length doens't affect the tension.

The wheel is driven by the friction between the mating face and the hub (or mating face of the disc/drum in most cases). It is NOT driven by the studs or bolts!

The proper offset (according to my hand book anyway) is 35mm. You can get 7J17 et35 rims on without spacers but they're bloomin close to the strut so an extra 16.35 mm closer would definately need spacers as said above :)

Me?

I don't have a picture of mine but they are very similar to this, only 4 stud and not pink:

I am in Australia so this might not be helpful but I got them from a guy at a tyre store, a Bob Jane T-Mart store at Chermside in Brisbane.
