Does anyone know why the Red Longlife is not recomended by BMW and the Green Extralife is ? They both say there ok with an Aluminium head :?

http://www.commaoil.com/ (sorry the link doesn't work properly, you have to go to products, then coolants)

There the same price in a local shop and i'm thinking of getting the five year one (red)

Any help appreciated
cheers

The comma stuff is Ԛ£24 for a five litre concentrate and the guy in the shop thinks that the green one is no good for BMW's when thats the one that has recomended by BMW on the label. And there's an e36 and an e39 out the back of the shop :?
All the other manufacturer's on the label recommend both the green and red. so i can't see why BM don't like the red one.
I've been reading a bit about phosphates but i'm still none the wiser :?

Does anyone know any more on the matter?

The BMW one goes down to -20 when mixed 1:2 with water, so you only need 2 bottles really... Wouldn't bother with anything else personally!

I've got the green Comma stuff in the 2.7, used to have the red stuff in the original 2 litre engine.

I haven't noticed any difference in cooling ability, although the red stuff stains the expansion bottle a bit.

The only real difference is that the life of the green one is shorter than the other.

Cheers,

Yeah the red is a five year job, i don't intend to leave it in that long but if it's in for two years (optomism) i would assume it will be half as weak as the green by that time. As it's the same price i'm tempted to buy the red but i remember reading something about the wrong kind of anti freeze that can do more harm than good due to a reaction between the different kinds of rust created by the steel and aluminium.
I just can't remember where
(getting a bit senile in my old age  )

As for you two tart  ....... go for it. (it keeps the thread at the top)

just put green comma stuff in my tourer and shes sweet as a nut! will see how she holds out on drift day monday as i doubt theres a bigger test for cooling than running under hard load with little airflow thru rad

will use it on my sport

Martin, I'm using an '86 325i standard box with a 3.91 large case at the moment.

I may change to a 3.73 for slighlty better motorway cruising, I found the 3.64 a little too tall.

Cheers,

I'm using the Comma Green stuff in mine, think it was about Ԛ£14 for a 5 litre bottle and it is low phosphate and recommended by BMW on the back.

I will more than likely blow the engine up before the antifreeze has turned vintage so it'll do for me
