What type of oil do you recommend for my 1989 325i sport which has 115k miles on it?

The magnatec is not all its cracked up top be, if the car is at the end of its leggs and used as a daily hack then fine, however if it is your pride and joy and in good condition then much better is available, in terms of quality.

Stock recomendation is 5w-40 fully synthetic or 10w-40 semi synthetic, things like modifications and driving use will make a difference on oil choice.

E-mail me for a list of options at sales@opieoils.co.uk

I would persoanlly go for a 5w-40 fully synthetic, something like the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 as it is BMW aproved.

Dont bother with the likes of homebrand synthetics as they are not synthetic at all but hydrocracked mineral oils, the Silkolene is what they call a true synthetic.

E-mail me for prices.

I can vouch for Simon's advice and service, as well as the quality of the the oils he supplies. And I'm sure there are a few others on this forum who will do the same.

Thanks man, at the moment it would be considered my daily hack because it is in bad shape, however after I work it over (full overhaul, body work etc.) she will be my pride.

she is a 3.20i with modifide hartge head that I would be using daily.

Simon,

I am prepping an e30 320 for racing this year. The car has probably covered 250K miles.

I am changing the oil this week before the first track outing on Saturday. I was considering a full synth (I use Mobil 1 in my regular transport), but am aware this may be too thin for a leggy, low tech engine. I would prefer her not to sound like a bag of spanners and pump the expensive stuff out of the seals. Nonetheless, a lower viscosity oil may liberate the odd fraction of a horsepower, which is the name of the game.

What do you recommend? Also, are flushing oils worthwhile?

Thanks

Simon,

I have a 1991 325 with about 156k on the clock. I think it had a life mainly on the motorways before me, now it has lots of short journeys and the odd longer run here and there. Engine is standard, and has been regularly serviced.

Could I have your recommendations on engine and gearbox fluids please?
Also, if you can supply, let me know your prices, delivered to Sheffield.

Cheers,

Dan

You can use these oils, but they are not the ideal grade.

The 10w-60 is too thick when hot, the Mobil will not provide great start up protection as it is quite thick when cold, the 15w.

The ideal grade for the car is 5w-40, 10w-40 or 10w-50.

If you want a top quality synthetic then I would look at the likes of Motul and Silkolene here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

Andrew,

The Mobil 1 will not be too thin if you use the 15w-50, this is a good track grade.

The others I would recomend are the Silkolene Pro R 15w-50 and the Motul 300V 15w-50.

Yes it is true that using a thinner oil can increase bhp marginally, however under track conditions you risk compromising your over all protection, risk of shearing down, the slightly thicker oils of the 15w-50 grade will provide great protection in terms of endurance under track use.

Dan,

You haved some options, it depends how much you wish to spend/protect.

As a good budget option a good 10w-40 semi synthetic like the Fuchs Titan XTR 10w-40 and change every 3-4K or so.

If you wanted to go full synthetic the a 5w-40 fully synthetic, the likes of the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 or the Motul 8100 X-cess 5w-40 as both of these are BMW approved.

For the gear box I would recomend the Silkolene Syn5 75w-90.

You can use these as well, may not be thick enough when hot though as these BMW's like the SEA40/50.

For best all year round use, a 5w-40

You have some options here,

You can go for a good semi synthetic 10w-40 like the Fuchs Titan XTR 10w-40 and oil change at around 6000 miles, or you can go for a 5w-40 full synthetic and change at aroun 9000 miles, fully synthetics are better and if you wanted to go down this route then the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 would be ideal.

Tech specs on the oils here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

And dont bother with a flush, waste of money.

For extreme use I would use the BMW Approved Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 which is a shear stable ester/pao fully synthetic.

Ian,

Thats a huge sump you have on that car

The Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 would be ideal for your car.

2 x 5ltr Pro S 5w-40 Ԛ£71.75 delivered.

There are other options available, but the Silkolene is at the top.

If the engine is still nice and tight, go for a good quality 5w-40 fully synthetic, like the SIlkolene or Motul. If the engine is a little loose then go for the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50.

For the E30 M3 we recomend the Silkolene Pro R 15w-50, we have supplied this to many M3's now with great results.

Got an oil service on my M42 318iS coming up soon. It's done 170k but had a top end rebuild 10k ago. Should I let the garage use the normal stuff (is an independent BMW specialist so probably BMW recommended grade) or should I supply something different?

Cheers,

Dom
