I have a 1990 325 convertible auto and looking to change engine, what would you guys suggest I would like to fit a bigger engine and would like to spend aprox Ԛ£1000 including fitting
my 3.5 conversion has cost a little over a grand in total. that includes stuff like limited slip diff etc, but entirely my own labour, i haven't paid anything to anyone to do anything!
on that budget i guess a 2.7 rebuild is realistic unless you're prepared to get your hands dirty!

Based in east sussex, I could spend a bit more, looking for the right donor car to pick up at a good price

Ԛ£1,000 just won't do it if you need to pay someone to do all the work I'm sorry to say.
You can half your budget straight away for labour costs which doesn't leave a lot for engine and parts.
The problem you have is that you already have the largest displacement stock M20 engine so an upgrade will consist of either a larger engine which will require a lot of custom fabrication which in turn will cost a lot more in labour or;
You'll need to strok your M20 wich will also be a lot in parts and labour/machining.
Basically you need a larger budget.

If you ignore the labour costs, what would Ԛ£1000 -Ԛ£1500 buy me, I would like to go 3.5 route

bid for the tired 3.5 conversion on the ebay section and youve got most of the hard work sorted and just get it fitted into your shell. & then just start cleaning it up like i am with my E34
