I am swaping out the motor on my 89 325i. The car is an auto and the motor I got to put is out of a 5spd. Here is the question. after pulling the bearing out of the crank shaft hole on the back of the motor to install and the tourqe converter out of the old motor the hole in the 5spd's motor is different than the motor from the auto. There is something that looks like a freeze plug in the bottom of the hole of both of them. The recess is shorter on the auto and cone shaped. Does this mater, do I need to find a new plug for lack of better term, The Bently manual does not refer to this.

First, welcombe to the zone.
I've gone the other way a few times, (auto to manual), and except for the presence or otherwise of the spigot bearing, have always found the crankshafts identical.
Post some pics if you can.

Have you changed the flywheel over?
Just make sure you put the torque converter in the box first, before you put the auto box on the engine, or you will break the oil pump in the gearbox like I did. It was a Ԛ£400 mistake

sorry for the late reply I have been out swamped at work and have not had time to work on the car. I have the flywheel off and am changing timing belt, water pump t-stat. valve cover gasket and adjusting valves. Oil pan gasket, intake and exhaust gaskets new flywheel bolts, blah blah. The Auto motor I pulled seems to have a well that is about a half an inch shorter that the manual motor I am putting in. I am coming to the conclusion that this does not matter as no one seems to have experience with this. I do not have a place to post the pics to. I could email you some direct if you would like.
