My wife was following me home the other day and whilst sat in traffic for a while started complaining that my exhaust fumes stank! I didn't think much of it at the time, but then i stood behind my car whilst it was idling in the driveway and she's right - it stinks! Really heavy exhaust fumes smell - not petrol or oil type smells, just usual exhaust, but very concentrated if you see what i mean.
I've got the 272/284 cam fitted so idle is very rough and low. Is it just because of this that my car smells, or could it be something else?
Out of interest, my fuel economy has gone up from a steady 22mpg original (which then went down to 19mpg when my head was cracked) to 24mpg after fitting the new head/cam/chip.
Exhaust fumes very smelly!

Have you done any thing to the car recently like exhaust change or something? Maybe exhaust paste or, new exhaust fumes?

Hi Pete, Take the car and get the CO emissions checked and tell who ever is checking them to set the CO at about 1.5, this will also help the tickover if its out! finnally trim to steady tickover with the mixture screw on the throttle body, hope this helps Dave

What mixture screw on the throttle body ??? .... Same prob with my exhaust after fitting the new head (m20 2.5) ...stinks . And the tickover is still lumpy .. cleaned afm, tps, adjusted throttle as best I can .... still lumpy.
Didn't think you could adjust the mixture with motronic !!

The car hasn't had a new exhaust recently and doesn't have a cat either.
I'll take the advice of taking it to get the CO checked and set up right.
The rough idle is due to the cam i'm told, but the chip that i've got fitted now keeps the idle very low - sounds really cool actually!
