The back end of my car has become very skittish over lumps and bumps in the road. Last time this happened was with my Golf GTI and both shocks were shot.. Same problem ??

Sounds like shocks, but it could be the rear shock mounts have given up or are on they way to giving up.
Are you getting any sort of knocking noises from the back? If so, its probably the RSMs.
Best to get it checked.

Could be shocks then.
Did it happen all of a sudden or have you just noticed that its not like it used to be?
If you want to check the RSMs, pull the carpet away from the side of the boot untill you can see the top of the shock and the mount. Bounce the car a little and if the shock is pushing through the mount, its dead. Dont forget to check both sides.
Also have a look round the rear bushes, some of these can wear and cause handling probs.
If you get new shocks, you can replace the RSMs at the same time with some E46 Cab items.

It's only one bolt on the bottom of the shock, take it out and push the shock up and down to see how stiff it is.

Or if the shock returns back down!
TBH your probably has worn sub frame bushes, rear top mounts and worn shocks! Most E30's do now.
Check your sub frame mounts the big ones infront of the rear wheels. the rolled out lip at the bottome of the bush should have a gap between this and the securing plate. If its right down they have collapsed
