I've just fitted a short shift to my tourer, a bit fiddly but fairly straight forward. The problem now is that because the Z3 lever is fatter than the original, the gaiter doesn't slide down it as far, and there isn't enough showing to attach the (after market) gear knob. Would a genuine BMW gear knob sort this out or should i try to streeeeetch the gaitor so it sits lower?

I've not had this problem so it must be something to do with your aftermarket knob.
