I decided to investigate an engine rattle last night. It's not very loud when driving. Originally sounded like a heat shield bolt had come loose or similar.
Anyway, with the bonnet open and the engine idling it became apparent that the noise was coming from the timing chain near the top of the engine.
I'm going to investigate futher, but imagine that a tensioner issue would be most likely.

I changed the chain, sprockets and guides 100K ago.

I spoke to a BMW parts person today who told me that this was common. So I've ordered a genuine chain and I'm going to replace that.

I've just taken it all apart and found the problem.
The top bolt on the fixed chain guide had worked loose. Part of the guide had cracked off and the bolt and runner were rattling around in the case.

I've got the right size helicoil kit for the thread. But I wonder if I should take the head off and get the area machined flat. Otherwise the guide runner might not sit straight.

Around 130K or so I think.

Was half due to just replacing a tensioner and not all the timing chain parts when engine started getting noisy.

What happened then was the chain and guides started coming apart and cracked the timing case and the little bits proceeded to get into the oil pump and make sh!t of that too

Ahh, I reckon that mess was just a combination of quite a few things really.

Shuey's or Gussy's old 318iS with 230K or so on the clock only needed a timing chaing rebuild at that stage and it pulled very well too :)
Shame Gussy had to sell it as he was leaving for Oz too though as the car fell into the hands of some lad that wanted to get the only extra the car didn't have which was an LSD and then proceeded to fit BKs instead of the Nogaro BBS 15"s and "Blacken some cross-roads" :x
