When you say 'pinion' seal, I assume you mean the single one at the front that the propshaft connects to.koos wrote:Hello all, just wanted to know if anyone has changed the pinion seal before. Assuming this is correct, then the most important thing to remember is not to tighten the nut back up any more than it is now.
Before you loosen the nut, use a centre punch or a scribe, and mark the nut and the flange. When you put things back together, you can do it up until the dots or lines are aligned with each other, but make sure you don't over tighten, and then back it off. There is a crush spacer inside that set's the pinion bearing pre-load. If you crush this any more than it is now, you will probably need to remove the diff, and get a specialist to set it all up again using a new crush spacer.
Once the pinion flange is removed, it should be a case of pulling the old seal out, and drifting the new one back in.
Nice to see another member around this area. I work in Horsham.
Cheers,
Ian.

i work on sprinter's and they have the same set up with the crush spacer, I did not know the beemer has the same, in that case i will use a small dial torque wrench and see what the preload is before I loosen the nut, thanks for the info, saved me alot of time. maybe i'll see you around in horsham, often there doing breakdowns.
