My ignition lock has seemingly broken, leaving me unable to turn the key past position 1 (steering lock off, radio + indicators still working)

I have the 2 original keys, and the problem presents with both keys.

If I can get the ignition lock out, is there a way to start the car with no replacement ignition lock and drive her ~10 miles home ?

(local scrapyards have no ignition locks + I'm under pressure to move the car asap...)

Remove the lower column shroud and lift up the upper part to expose the rear of the ignition switch.Remove the plastic part with the wires attached to it.You should now be able to replecate the key in this part to start the car. Most likely it is this bit that is faulty.

Switch the key to position 1,insert a long thin panel pin or similar into the smallhole ext to the key slot. While pushing the pin in with some pliers pull on the key to slide the barrel out.
You will then be able to turn it over with a screwdriver etc.
Thats assuming that the barrel is at fault.
If it turns out that the actual housing is at fault then id suggest you use Daimlermans method to start it up otherwise youll have to start bridging wires under the bonnet ie + feed to coil+ and jump the starter etc.
I have a full ignition lock assembly and key if you need it :D

thanks for the fast response guys -

am tied up at work - but ran out to the car when i got a few minutes - I tried the pin in the small hole (and a small allen key, and a bit of copper wire...) but no luck with the barrell coming out

I wiggled both pin and key around and even tried shouting at it

Is is necessary to remove the wheel & plastic shroud first ?
or do i just need to pull the barrell with some beans (feels like theres no give in it right now) ?

@eko
If I do get the barrell out - how easy is it to engage the ignition switch with a screwdriver ?

@ daimlerman
will your method still work if i can't get the ignition lock barrell out ?

The barrels can be fiddly to remove but it may be a case that it isnt in exactly the right position for the locking pin to release?
Once the barrel is pulled out you will see a slot which the barrel turns, simply use a flat screwdriver to turn it as you would a key.
Daimlermans method of removing the shroud and starting with the ignition switch will work regardless of the barrel being removed or not just make sure the key is on position one atleast to deactivate the steering lock.

problem solved & car is driving -

couldn't get the barrel out - so used daimlermans method - at least I can get it home and try again with the barrel. (eko I think you're right about the key not exactly being in position 1..)

thanks a million fellas - really appreciate the help.

final question - if I can't get the barrel out the proper way - is there any other way to get it out ? or do I need an entire new column ?

On the bottom of the lock assembly there is a shear bolt. You need to remove this to slide the lock off the column, after you have removed the steery wheel and the column stalks and shouted and sworn a bit... I used an angle grinder to cut a slot in the shear bolt head, but be careful as you can easily damage the column. You can also use a centre punch and birmingham spanner to get it moving.
