a lot of us have had the same sort of symptoms, normally turns out ot be an exhaust manifold crack. make sure you give it a good checking over..

does it happen when cold/warm/both?

this is not a poverish m42 mate this is a properish engine with nearly enough valves.

325's tap. they are adjustable.

Now can we all pay attention to the zone wiki waffle waffle

the manifold is 98% fine mate he has no idea what he's on about and has seen a few posts about 318is owners having a tappy engine, thus every tap is now a cracked manifold.

Yeah, they can be adjusted here is the guide on how to do it. It's very easy to do yourself.
The mani might leak, but I have never heard of a cracked mani on a 325 and it's certainly not worth trying to change the gaskit just in case as the studs are prone to snapping :(

here is a link on how to adjust the tappets

injectors can tick quite loud too, rev it up a bit then kill the ignition whilst the revs are up at about 4k, if the noise you are on about stops before the engine stops turning then it's the injectors

With regards to killing the ignition do you find a pistol is enough or is a 12 bore shotgun more apt?

Ah, I see, how about PAS fluid, what are your thoughts on this needless extra weight?

Oh, you actually use it? I didn't bother also to aid the weight situation I run the clutch and brake fluid levels at the minimum mark at all times.

valve lifters, rocker arms, tappets, whatever u want to call them need periodic adjustment. the wee eccentric lobes should be adjusted to 0.30mm with the engine stone cold. id get this done ASAP as when i bought mine it was well overdue and i ended up breaking 2 rocker arms which is a pain in the backside to replace unless they are on the #6 cylinder in the back, all otehrs are a pain in the rear. i took the liberty of changing all 12 as i broke the ones for the #1 cylinder.
