M40 1.8L into a 316?

As above, tinking of swapping my M40 1.6L with a 1.8L. Will the increased power improve fuel economy by hauling the car easier/faster from standstill?

I've owned a 318 and now drive a 316, (both m40 engines) and i can't tell the difference between them, just as crap (by crap i mean noisy and slow) as each other. m20,m42 or m50 the best ways to go.
