maybe pull the front bit by the badge up while somebody holds the release catch open

I'd say the opposite actually. Push hard down on the bonnet badge and you may here a click. This happens when the bonnet has been shut has not gone FULLY home. You may hear it finally latch fully. Then pull the bonnet release lever and it should pop up. Then lubricate the latch mechanism which will help things in the future.

have done also had to clear off nearly an inch of dirt from the catch under the badge at the front with a wire brush, where it was stopping it from opening.
