The only Weber carb I know of was to replace the Pierburg carb on the 316 (engine code M10).

Why do you want to fit a carb to your M40? If you want more BHP pick up an M42.

Hi fella, welcome. I'm pretty sure that the 318i doesn't have a carb, only the 316.
I may be wrong.......

M10 318i's are fuel injected but I'm sure it'll be straight forward enough to bung them onto carbs. E21Jason seems to be the guy in the know when it comes to who does what for these motors, drop him a PM.

Have you considered bike carbs instead? A mate of mine has a mk1 Golf with a DIY bike carb setup using Yamaha R6 carbs. I must admit it shifts pretty well and sound just as cool as Webbers.

I had one on my old 316 but I bought it from a BMW breaker.
I changed it because the old carb was worn out but why change from injection to carbs?

A modern ITB setup on an M10 would be quite cool. There are a few guys running triple Webbers on M20s with some pretty impressive results.
