hi everyone. neeed a bit of help please. i have bn told i can fit an e36 m3 steering rack to my e30 316rally car? is this true & how u do it please ? and also do u know where i can get a quick rack for an e30 and how much?
It is true. I have an E36 steering rack on my 323i, not sure if it is M3 or normal (probably normal) but they are the same or very similar to fit.
Doing this may require modifications to the exhaust or exhaust manifold to get it to fit and if you have power steering I think you need to get new pipes mad up for the power steering fluid. I also think that the coupling on the shaft from the steering wheel has to be made up from a combination of the E30 and E36 bits or modified slightly or something. I think it is not too bad though and definately worth it, especially for motorsport.
I have heard that the 1.9L Z3 is even quicker than the E36 M3 (M3 is about 3.2 turns and Z3 is supposed to be under 3 I think?). There is a thread about this that you can search for. I think someone mentioned they have a proper quick steering rack too, about 2 turns lock to lock or something.

If you don't need PAS, a 2.25 turns, LHD Talbot Sunbeam rack can be fitted upside down, even uses standard TREs.
I know two people who use this set up in E30 rally cars.
If you use E36, the Z3 1.9 is deffo the way to go. (2.75 turns.)
The E36 M3 rack has less turns lock to lock than the 'standard' E36 rack, but it outputs less and is the same 'speed'/ratio.

In the Yahoo E30 group there is a thread going at the moment with a link to a gearbox device that replaces part of the steering column, and reduces the number of steering turns by 1 : 1.5 .
Anyone ever tried one of these or have any knowledge of them?

There's a couple of owner's clubs, especially for the Lotus version.
TAS are also not in existence anymore, they owe me a quick rack!

I saw a TAS 'weld on coil over adaptor' for some front struts, what a load of rubbish, I wouldn't have used it on a push bike.
There are loads of LHD Sunbeam racks around Widge, less than Ԛ£100 usually. I'll find a link.
There's a member on here uses one. (Jon Finch, from Pickering.)

So I'm not the only one who was waiting to hear from TAS only to find telephone number not available, no website or e-mail response.
They've set-up under a different name and continued trading apparently.HillclimbE30 wrote:So I'm not the only one who was waiting to hear from TAS only to find telephone number not available, no website or e-mail response.
Haven't found a LHD rack link yet Widge.

There are websites where you can request parts from lots of scrapyards, who email you with price and availibility.
Presumably they have something similar in the LH drive countries of Europe.
If you can find a link to one of these sites you might get results.

A guy I know used to buy/break Sunbeam rally cars, he binned 2 LHD Q/Rs last year.
