Hi - my 320i has the standard 4.1 open diff - it goes really well (yeah, I know, fpr a 2 litre lol) but the fuel consumption is pretty poor - 25mpg max, down to 22 - 23 around town. I've got a 1988 316 which I'm breaking, I notice that the diff is listed at 3.91 ratio - could I put this straight in to my 320 to improve fuel economy? My maths tell me it would change gearing by 4.85% - is it worth the effort? Any advice/experiences welcome.

anything lower than a 4.10 diff on a 320i is an improvement . I've to 3.64 and it has made a difference. but don't expect miracles especially around town. you will only really notice on long motorway journeys. I hope this helps
