Just randomly my electric windows on both sides have stopped working. I was worried about where I was gonna park it as the passenger side was fully down at the time. However, when I opened the door both sides worked again!!

What is likely to have broken if they dont work with the doors shut but do with them open?

The windows (and sunroof) use a different fuse when they operate with the ignition on, than they use with the doors open.
Fuse for ignition on is 17, for doors open it is fuse 28.
So, first check fuse 17, then, if this is OK, pull out relay K5, and with a short piece of wire, short together pins 30 and 87 of it's socket. With this link in place the windows should operate woith or without the ignition.
If they still don't work, then find a relay behind the rear left of the glovebox (remove panel above glovebox), and try replacing this. Also check that a green/blue wire with a single socket on it is plugged firmly in place on the accessories power socket, also at the back left of the glovebox.
