Clocks aren't run on cables, so that rules that one out...

To help find what it is, I had a drive of his car earlier and the only reason you can hear it is cause his car is so smooth and quite
Took me two laps of his close before I noticed it, but it has been getting on his nerves, and you know how it is, once you know somethings there it bugs you... I'd describe it as a kinda hissing and quite ticking noise, seems to be rev counter because it increases with the revs...,
How are the dials run anyway???

rev counter is electronic, think speedo is too, so no speedo cable, but i may be wrong on that count.
Does it only do it with the car moving? i.e. if you sat there and just revved it up slowly, would it make the noise then?

Try sticking a piece of bluetack down the steering column... this should quieten things down. Honest. Take the centre of the steering wheel off, and shove a large piece down the hollow section of the column... it'll stop any engine noise comign into the cabin.

it doesn't make any noise if i rev it on the spot but when moving the noise speeds up with the car.like wilson said its not loud but i know its there.........i think i'll just have to turn me stereo up

well I'm buggered if I can throw any useful suggestions in here mate.
Only other thing I can suggest is get someone to stand at the kerbside and drive past and get the person stood at the kerb to listen for any noises. May also be worth doing this with the car in gear, i.e. actually driving and then a pass with it in neutral or with the clutch dipped to see if it is drivetrain or not.
Have you tried the trick with the blutack on the steering column yet?
