Mass Flow or Air Flow, that is the question...

Need technical Q/A then you're in the right place

I have a 1989 E30 325i - the air flow meter is gubbed (not adjusting fully, CO too high, running too lean ) and I'm toying with the idea of upgrading to a Mass Flow Meter (read about this option somewhere but can't recall where) as opposed to simply replacing the AFM. Does anyone know: i) what advantage (or disadvantages) I would get from this (note: running a 57i soon to have cold air ducting), and ii) where I can find an upgrade?

Alternatively where should I go for a recon AFM?

Ta.

P.S. Thanks to 'Bill Gates aka Chris' for directing me here

You need to convert the signal from the maf to be compatible with the existing ecu or fit a new ecu, either piggy back or standalone.

unichip seems to be common way forward and I'll be doing it myself before long. Karen is your man for more info there as he's got one already on his 2.7

otherwise I've been looking at this:

http://www.carlton24v.co.uk/afmmaf.htm

This is a pic based converter that will work on the standard ecu. the carton in question is motronic 1.5 but I'm sure this will either work or is easily adaptable.

I think somebody on the zone is also looking to start supplying maf kits but I know nothing about that sorry.

As for differences I can't really say much as I haven't got one. I hear they rev freer. From what I can tell maf is "just better". I think afm stops metering at quite a low rpm which means wide open fueling isn't as optimum as it could be... can somebody explain this a bit better as I'm not sure of the exact details.

Anyway mate, hope that gives you a bit of info.. won't be lon before somebody can give you some more concrete info :)

Thanks for that, if what the guy says re: improved throttle response is true then I definitely want to upgrade :D(been trying to improve throttle response, thats what led me to find out the AFM is gubbed).

I'd also like to know more about 'Unichip' as I was considering this as my next step (until I found out about the AFM, but once that's fixed...), maybe that's a new thread though...?

Phone up Bexleys for info on the MAF conversion, they did Karan's car.

Karan's car already had it fitted when he bought it.

Their number is 0208 304 9797
