Does anyone know what constitutes TUV approval on braided brake hoses?
I have got hold of a set of Earl's hoses for my 318iS off ebay, but the question is do I need to worry about whether they'll pass an MOT or not?

Cheers,

unless they constrict the steering or cause the brakes to be at an unsafe low, which is very unlikely if there an upgrade, so they shouldnt fail the mot

Current SVA regulations require braided hose to have an outer sheath to prevent chaffing.
You could be on bubious legal ground if you use a set of un sheathed ones on the road.

Aha! The Goodridge ones I bought (wrong set) were sheathed, these aren't.

On the whole, I think I'll get rid of both sets and start again with the correct Goodridge ones.

Cheers all.

Just fitted a set of Goodridge hoses to the 2.7 and they made a huge difference to the braking.

Got mine from http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog/default.php cost Ԛ£46.20 plus Vat and delivery for the 6 line kit.

And these are sheathed.

Cheers,

Right - plan C

I'll get it MOT'd, then put the Earl's ones on. Chances are I'll sell it before next MOT anyway

Cheers again!

If they are TUV approved, then IIRC they would be better than the UK standards.....Its very expensive to get parts through the TUV system in Germany....basically if it aint TUV there, then its fake, rubbish or illegal!

Unsheathed is fine for motorsport as the usage/time per replacement is a lot lower than it is for road cars. The sheath is there to stop grit from getting in behind the braid and abrading the Teflon inner section into a hole. This used to be a problem with SS brakelines as you couldn't inspect the inner coating, hence the reason why they now have outer sheaths.
