Hi Everyone, im new, i bought my bmw 316i 2 door white car about a week and a half ago, then pulled up my drive and scraped the sump, i was wondering if anyone could help me with information about the sump. from what i can see on the internet it has a top sump and bottom sump, i think i have only damaged the bottom part but not too sure, can anyone tell me where to get replacement parts cheap because i cant seem to find any at all, and i want to get back on the road in this car cause its great fun.

Thanks Terry

I have now found a sump on a car at the scrapyard, they tell me it is Ԛ£25 but i have to remove it off the car myself, they told me that i might have to drop the engine out to get it off, please could someone tell me how i can take the sump off at the scrapyard, if i have to drop the engine or not, and is it worth it if i can get one already off a car for around the same sort of money.

Thanks in advance Terry

What is the sump made of? You might be able to get your sump welded? I have the sump on my 323i (M20 engine, I think the sump is alloy?) welded twice and it seems ok. Not sure how much it costs though, might be cheaper or easier to get another one because you still have to take it off to weld it anyway.

Thanks for the reply.

I am not too sure because i no nothing about car engines really.

My bmw is a 316i 2dr lux 1990. engine is 1600cc

I can get a second hand sump from scrappy for Ԛ£25, but i have to take it off myself, or my friend works for Rac and he will weld it for me if it can be done.

So really i need to know what engine is in my car, i think its a m40 but not sure, and if the engine needs to be raised so the oil pump can be drained, otherwise it looks like i can jack it up and undo the 15 bolts, give it a tap with the hammer and hope it pops off, is that the case or will i have to undo engine mounts and other things, hoping to do this tonight, so reply's would be very much appreciated.

Thanks Terry

Sorry I can't help. I didn't take mine off, the mechanic did, and I have an M20 engine anyway (6 cylinder).

Somebody here will know though, come on guys!

Its ok now, i just went for it, i drove the car up two ramps and loosened about 15 bolts and gave it a tap and it popped off. it is the M40 engine with aluminium sump and i am going to get a new one from the scrappy for Ԛ£25.
Thanks

removing the sump isn't an issue , jack up the car, and undo all all, think theres about 18 bolts, cant remeber, but i suggest you take of the sump from the current car and get it welded...i cracked my sump on my previous car, just remeber you need to replace the sump gasket as well, and get some sort of gasket selant, so take cost into consideration if needed...u can get the sump welded , new gasket and selant for half the prices of buying that sump..

Ԛ£25 for a sump seems a bit steep. Scrappy I use, I would get the whole engine for that. Try an internet scrapyard search.

I know you probably want it cheap BUT may i recommend Euro Car Parts, they have new sumps for Ԛ£60. I believe it also comes with a guarentee

I doubt if the guarantee covers smacking it a road hump though!
