i need a new exhaust - help please
Moderator: martauto
I have a 318is and it needs a new exhaust.
Can anyone suggest a good type of exhaust for this car.
i am looking mainly to improve economy as well as a little of performance.
what are the advantages or disadvantages of a stainless steel exhaust over an ordinary quick fit exhaust.
Would be willing to fit it myself
thanks
johnny

ah god you are def. a newbie! not with the lingo at the mo! just messing with you buddy! a lot of lingo you need to get used too on here; all sorts of weird abbreviations!
i always get confused! your not the only one!
i have a S/S (stainless steel - one more abbrev you learnt now!) on my 325i Sport. Full system, is on the loud side Id say but i wanted that anyway. i got somewhat increase in top end performance; and what i assume is a bullet proof lifetime system now!
genuine dealership parts will last you a long long time, but obv come at a sig higher price!
do you feel you need to replace the whole system, or is it that the back box is blowing and your checking out the options?

thanks for the reply siddiqi - i think the whole system needs to be cganged as she seems to be blowing close enough to the manifold.
so am really looking to gain back a bit more mpg and also more of a comfortable drive.
Not really looking for a loud system - could you reccomend any system in particular

if its not noise you want then theres a few more options i suppose:
SEBRING; very quite systems but do have a little rumble to them, but very civilised! great quality and complete S/S system again.
OEM: now you can buy all orginal parts, geta two yr guarentee for free and be in the knowledge that this is the stuff to have; very quite systems, quality is there but pricey i assume from dealers.
im sure the non-oe kwik fit stylie dtuff works, but how well and quality cannot be reassured!
its a shame miltek dont do one for the sports!

I just replaced the 2 part exhaust on my sport from the dealer cost £500. £300 for the back section which I did last year and £200 for the front which I did yesterday. The original exhaust had lasted 18 years, not many cars you can say that for.
If I can't fix it I'll f**k it up so bad nobody can!!

thats expensive; def agree with you that no exhaust i think could out last that; but at that price you can get a full S/S system, if not that bit cheaper! but delaer parts have quality about them! al really depends on the pocket i would think tooo!
how does it sound abelai?

The exhaust is quiet but still has that m20 rumble. I have had "life time" stainless steel exhausts on other cars before but unless you pay seriously good money the fit and finish is not as good as you get with an original BMW exhaust.
The usual trouble with S/S exhausts are the poor quality hangers (poorly welded on), leaks from joins and the clearance under the rear subframe.
I do agree though that going genuine it is not a cheap option.

genuine BMW all the way I'd be suprised if you can actually get the front section from anywhere but the dealers for an is.
I think last time I priced it it was around £400 all in, I know Chris W has a supersprint rear section in..
Also check it isnt you manifold thats blowing, it's a common fault

Bollocks to this 24v scrap!

I'm just about to get a new oem back box. Can anyone confirm the parts I'll need?
Looking at realoem http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=18&fg=20 I'm guessing I need parts 8,9,10,11, 12 (and 14!)
Probably 15?
Any other bits?
Thanks!
