Hi!
could be a number of things
1. The central Locking Control Unit (in the drivers side footwell behind the speaker) could be not functioning correctly. can get spare ones easily
2. The connector pins in the door hinge bit (between front of drivers door and front wing) could be corroded
3. The actuators for the central locking on each door could have failed.
do a search on the forum for central locking and you'll find all the answers you need
Good Luck

Firstly, welcome bmfanatic to the e30zone. I'm sure you'll find everything you ever wanted to know about e30's here - and more!
However, please note that the forum is split into sections and there's one specifically for technical queries like yours. As such, i'm going to move your post to the correct area, where i'm sure you'll get plenty of responses. Central locking faults aren't uncommon unfortunately, so try using the search facility and see what comes up.
Good luck!

There's another thread going at the moment.
Pay special attention to the bit about red/black wires.
