************engine advice needed*************

i have a 1988 e reg 318i auto coupe the bottom end wen t*ts up and now sounds like a bag of hammers so i daren't run it! can i put an m10 engine in it or do i have to use another m40 engine? i cant find 1 in yhe north west of england anywhere for a decent price i would just bin the car but it is mint other than a poorly motor any help much appreciated!!!!
