propshaft removal

I am going to be towing my new auto home tomorrow.

I am going to remove the propshaft to save the gearbox (I hope)

Could someone reassure me that it's not a difficult job to remove the propshaft on an E30 please

Remove the exhaust
Remove the heat shield
Remove the prop.
Prop removal is 4 17mm nuts attaching it to the diff and these will be tight. A little lube and a couple of spanners linked together for leverage and the car in gear with the handbrake on will make it easy.
On the other end unbolt the 3 17mm nuts and bolts securing the rubber guibo to the box.
Then its just a matter of removing the 2 13mm bolts that secure the centre mount/bearing to the underside.

if you are not towing it far (25 miles) stick an extra litre of tranny oil in the thing and tow it slowly (30mph) in neutral

Thanks - its about 50 miles I have to go. If I can't get the prop off then will break journey into 2 and do that. Watch out for slow moving Passat down M23 with BMW on tow

When I broke down I asked the breakdown guy to tow it backwards on a spec (so only the front wheels on the ground) the guy agreed but was this pointless then? (was only 4 miles to the garage so not likely to damage either way) it had a recovery on a trailer.

I had to tow mine not so long ago, the book said 31 mph for 31 miles with an extra 1.8 litres of atf, i done about 37 miles and it was fine.

Is there not a peice of the shaft that comes out rather than taking the whole thing out?

undo 4 diff bolts split and slide it forwards off the diff input flange, no need to remove the whole prop.. also you dont need to remove the exhaust you can work around it
