I got the diffs swapped on my 316i and afterwards the speedo kept dipping, like it was losing the signal from the sensor on the diff. I checked the plug on the back of the sensor and also removed the sensor the clean it. There was a small bit of gunk on it, but mainly clean.
As the car is off the road at the moment I couldn't bring it out to check it its working now. Is it possible that the sensor itself is broken?

It's more likley to be a dodgy connection or the wire that go's to the sensor is braking up in side.

Connector looks very clean inside, with no corrosion. I ordered a new speedo sensor today as a precaution. The new owner took the car this evening and he is supposed to let me know if its still misbehaving. No calls yet, so maybe fixed. Fingers crossed.

It's almost certainly not the sensor, or even the connector if it's nice and clean.
The wire to the sensor breaks internally just outside of the plug. If you pull gently at the individual wires, then you will probably find that one stretches.
Best method of repair, is to get a two pin connector from somewhere else ( e.g. headlamps) off a scrap E30, complete with a long length of wire. Change the outer yellow plastic part over, cut off the old speedo lead, and splice your new one on with soldered joints and heat shrink sleeving. Making the join inside the car, under the back seat, is best.

Thanks guys. The guy who bought the car range me yesterday to say it still had the problem, so cleaning didn't fix it. I bought a new sensor so I can definitely rule it out of the equation, and I'm supposed to be going out to him tomorrow to try it. From your feedback, I guess I should wait and get a new connector from the dealer, might have one in the garage.
It's a pain in the ass, but I promised the guy I'd fix it for him when he bought the car, and I don't want to be one of these people who take the money and run.
