Timing chain on 318is

I have managed to strip the engine & get to the chain. The Cam sprockets look ok but how would I tell if they are worn? Do I really need to change them too?

What's the job been like so far then?
I had a quick look in the Haynes manual it looked fairly straightforward?

When i bought my iS it had had the chain done, but the receipt contained a warning that the gear was worn and would best be fixed; however, I figure that if it was badly worn they'd have had to change it, and there's no sign of any trouble.

In short, I think you would notice on inspection if they were worn, and with a new chain, wear is less likely as the chain would not be moving around much on the gears.

Since it's about Ԛ£400 to get this done, I'm choosing to ignore it; it would probably work out cheaper to get a new engine in case of major failure...!

It hasnt been straight forward as I thought. I had a little bit of a problem when trying to undo one of the bolts (water pump) just it wouldnt come off in the end I cut the head off !!

I am suprised how many srews/bolts they are!!! Good fun anyway but u need to have the right tools.
