525e for a 2.7

Ihave just aquired a 525e motor from the local breakers,92000 miles for Ԛ£100. :D
Anyway,what all has to be swapped over to my 325 bottom end and is there any special machining that needs done

you're better off using the 2.5 bottom end and head for the 2.7, and using the crank out of the 2.7 to increase the stroke

the 525e block has less baring shells on it and the 2.7 head is not a good design for maximum power.

you will also need 2.0 rods for the pistons as the 2.5 rods are too long

alternatively, you can drill the barings in the eta block so that they all have oil supplied and fit a 2.5 head

So if you wanted to make a 2.7 out of a stock 2.5 lump, you would need just the crank from the E28 525e yeah? and then the 2.0 rods, and any other custom bits etc
Then you need to take some off the top of the block to increase the c.r. right?
I know there are loads of different options for the 2.7 route, but just want to know what the most common and effective methods are - cheers

What you have just said James is what I plan to do. And I think it will yeild the best 2.7 short of having custom pistons made. Go for it, you need to take about 1.5 mm off the block.

Its just the 2.7 head that needs drilling not the block. The 2.7 block can be used with a 320 or 323 head and will not require drilling.

The best way to do it is:
525e crank
325 block
325 head
325 rods
custom pistons
and 325 or uprated camshaft
This way the block won't need to be machined.

Or you can:
525e crank
325 block
325 head
320 rods
325 pistons
and 325 or uprated camshaft
then get the block (and possibly the piston skirts) shaved.

Or you could just use a complete 525e bottom end + 320i head + 325i cam with 325i inlet manifold and a 325/327 chip.

Not the most performance gain, but the easiest and simplest.

Id say save your money and stick a 320i head on the ETA block with 284/272 cam and spend the massive amount you save on proper tuning.

You will have a very torquey engine with good enough top end power.

Aim to get monstrous midrange and this is what will make your car a very fast machine.

200lb.ft from 2300 rpm all the way to 4500 rpm (flat torque curve) is what i had on my Alpina and that went like stink!

Doesn't the

alpina use a 325 block head and pistons???? :wink:
