I would imagine (not sure of the exact weight difference) that the alloys are considerably lighter than the steel wheels, hence the term used by BMW lightweight alloy wheel.

From what i have found, alloy wheels can be heavier than steel ones. The only exception being magnesium.

bbs and oz are generaly lighter though.
