Nevermind have just gone through your old posts I thought you had an M20 and it seems you do!

The viscous coupling is what drives the fan, so most likely this is what needs replacing. The fan doesn't move on its own so unless you have blades missing, broken off or its in a terrible state you probably don't actually need a new fan.

You really don't want to be taking your engine temp over 3/4 very often - your head gasket will be at risk!
E30 Touring 0.35 cD - more slippery than prison soap :)
