Your rebuild looks fantastic mate, Loving the steam cleaner! they expensive? after doing the calliper rebuild replacing all the rubber seals etc, will it improve anything at all? or is it a peace of mind knowing you've got something decent under your foot that isn't 18 years old?and not to mention looks good painted

I think the whole rebuild cost me about £800, including H&R ARBs. The Springs and shocks were second hand - but only 6 month old genuine BMW ones.no1_jazz wrote:looking good how much is this whole rebuild costing overall ?

After much scraping of rust with 70's drill the trailing arms look like this now having their Bilt hummer blue coat!

After making sure all the surface were clean and free from paint I started the reassembly of the trailing arms.

I then gave them a couple of coats of hammerite and fitted new backing plates.

I then did the same kinda thing with the rear subframe bushes. As you will notice I'm using old hubs as spacers.

And gave it some hammerite

Whilst trying to put new bushes in the lollipops I broke my vice... ooops!

Nice girl at B&Q gave me another one, I think she was impressed by my strength of snapping metal!
Always use a picnic table as a work bench! - you can sit down.

Yes it wasn't working got a garage to do it in the end. Took me a while to find somewhere to do it - ended up being a cylinder head reconditioning place as they use big presses.

One or two pics of the front - its not that photogenic there!

Wan't happy with the H&R ARBS when they did this...

Got new mounts and reduced the size of the bush. I think the bush is the wrong size - can't see how it would have fitted safely.

Going by the first pic of the ARB you have fitted the bushes the wrong way round, they are deffo the right size and i have yet found a problem fitting the H&R supplied ones.

Lol see what you what you mean by the first pic.
Deffo didn't fit them like that, they wouldn't have got anywhere near being fitted the wrong way round - due to the flat bit.
I thought simon13 had issues?

What have I been upto in all this time I hear you all ask? Well still a fair amount of work...
Timing chain was the next major issue. It had been noisy ever since I bought the car, tried replacing tensioner but to no avail. - so it was the whole job.
I hadn't even taken the valve cover off this car, but decided to replace everything (sprockets, chain and guides + gaskets) I didn't see much point just replacing the chain, from my knowledge of mountain bikes - when the chain wears and stretches it wears the sprockets.
I'm not writing a how to as it is all written here;
http://www.esatclear.ie/~bpurcell/318istimingchain.html
This write up is great and it all worked - including using the started to get the crankshaft bolt off (Ok I admit I killed one socket - but I never liked it)
I also didn't use a locking tool - I couldn't afford near enough £100 for one. I used my m40 bit to hold the flywheel though - and just kept and eye on the cams.
Pics
As you can see how worn the sprockets are! (new left old - right)

Lower guide wear

Random engine shots with old chain

After the car is now sooooo much quieter. All the dodgy rattling has gone!
It took me a couple of goes to get the timing right, first it dieseled a bit, then it wouldn't idle perfect. Now it seems to be OK.
Not 100% sure but it feels a little down on power - I do suspect that is lack of noise though!
I then went to France

When I came back from France I actually cleaned my car and took some pictures!
It is in OK condition, but I think the bodywork is the next major thing....

Not 100% sure of width - I can't remember...
They have 205 tyres on them
Fronts have 5mm spacers though

cue a post to the tech section ...
E46 M3 CSL but dreaming of another E30.
would you say it was worthwhile changing the whole lot, as my iS has 116k on the clock, i believe the tensioner was changed a few years ago, but not sure on the mileage it was done at. It seems that the rattle has become worse since when I bought the car, and being a student, i'm not too keen on spending over £300 on this job
.
the rattle does get on my nerves at time! your views would be appreciated.

From my experience fi you can hear the rattle i would sort it, i took my old engine apart, 118k miles and rattled a bit. The sprockets really were on the last legs and thank god i didn't run it much longer!

Yup waste of time just doing the chain - you must do the sprockets as well. The new chain won't fit the old sprockets very well probably making it worse.
Mine only had 106, 000 on it. It has been noisy for all the time have owned the car (2 years) and the previous owner said it had been noisy for a while.
Maybe I was just skating on thin ice..but it didn't look like is was about to break or anything.

Excellent thread. I'm finding all this very helpful since I'll be attempting all this quite soon!!
Alot of people have told me that this duplex chain is made to never be replaced, so i was never too concerned with the rattle. how much would it cost me on parts and labour as this isn't a DIY job for me...
Thanks
Ajay

OK from Paul (ZimmerBimmer1 - Costwold BMW)
I got Chain, Sprockets, new Tensioner, guides and lower Sproket - (everything inside basically) Around £330
I then got all my gaskets from my local dealer (for some random reason) £45 (Friggin expensive!)
So thats £375 + coolant.
If you haven't replaced your Waterpump or Therostate now is a very good time. (about and extra £30)
In a garage in London I don't recon you will see change for £150 labour at least. ( I don't really have a clue though as I have never taken my car to a garage...apart from MOT)
