Think it was just general wear in the end. All of the bearings were worn down to the backing so they weren't exactly tight. Just a bit wierd how suddenly it happened:

I started it up to move the car on Christmas day, the revs did their usual cold hunting trick but then they dropped away almost entirely. Anyhoo, the engine kicked itself back into life (so it hadn't stopped completely) but as the revs came back up, there was this banging noise :(

...has loud injectors, audible smoetimes when driving, very much so with the windows open.

But a few years ago, a stud or two sheared in the exhaust manifold (very common on 325's), and that got a fair bit louder when you increased the engine load...
