You need a 325i chip in the 320i ecu to run an M20B25, else you'll have incorrect ignition timing and fuelling.

I've fitted the 325i ECU now, as I mentioned above, it ran fine for a time, then strange running came back. Do I still need to change the chip in the 325i ECU, i'm guessing it's something else causing the problem though.

No, the 325i ECU should already have a 325i chip! Have you actually tried taking it for a drive?

Kind of difficult as I've not yet fitted the pedal assembly :D Going to try the ECU re learn procedure again, all be it in a stationary manner.

Check out the distributor cap and rotor and/or the c191 under the inlet manifold.

Excellent Brian, whilst looking in the wiki for the c191 plug, I noticed also mention of the TPS under the inlet manifold.

It wasn't plugged in :o: :o:

Now this is why the Zone really is fantastic, for div's like me :D

Hmmm! Wouldn't expect a non plugged in TPS to have quite the effect you described. Without it plugged in, it won't switch to the idle map when the throttle is closed, but that shouldn't affect things other than make the idle speed wander about a bit and be rough - hundreds of E30s running like this all of the time. It would make the engine flat on hard acceleration, but shouldn't affect anything below 2/3 throttle at all.

To give an exact descrition, the plug for the TPS was plugged into the ICV and the TPS wasn't plugged in at all.

Now the ICV & TPS are both plugged in and the correct way around it's perfect.

How do you mean pipe work Andy, for the clutch? If so, yes :D

Incidently, how does one fit the towbar, for the life of me I can't see where anything goes yet

BMW towbars mount on irons that replace the rear bumper mounts. Most after market bars attach to a piece of angle iron laid along the rear edge of the boot floor, with further attachment points to the bottom of the spare wheel well.

Ah I see, I did wonder some of the parts I have attached to the spare wheel well, that in mind, I should be able to work out where the rest of it goes.

Watch this space Brian as I wire it up wrong then ask for help

Take the brake and tail light feeds from near the 'in' plug of the bulb check module in the LH boot pocket to avoid upsetting the 'check' panel. Earthing point is nearby in there as well. Fit enough 7 core cable to comfortably reach the top of the LH rear wheel arch inside the car.

Don't quite know how you managed to fit a three pin TPS plug to a four pin ICV socket, but I presume the effect must have been to lock the ECU into the idle map.

Have you noticed my electrical knowledge is at best, poor? All i know is, she's running fine now, incidently, i'm pretty sure my ICV is only 3 pin :D

Thankyou for the wiring advise on the towbar, what about the left and right indicators? Do I just take a feed from either side?

You're right - both are three pin. Confusing it with another engine model.
Indicators just tap into the respective wires, and you can pick these up from the loom near the bulb check module as well.
To be legal, you need a method of showing that the trailer indicator bulbs are working. This can be done with something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-Tow ... 9203&rt=nc , which can be fitted by the speaker grill in the boot, and just connects in series with the idicator wires to the trailer, or you can do the job as BMW intended, and replace the three pin indicator 'relay' on the steering column with a four pin one, and wire the fourth pin to the green warning light position provided for the purpose, immediately to the left of the SI lights in the instrument cluster.

Good man, thanks for the info, IIRC towbars are now part of the MOT if they are fitted and must work accordingly.

Only the 13 pin ones. Old style 7 pin is exempt.

I always thought the 13 pin electrics were a fairly modern thing and then found the electrics on my Westfalia bar are 13 pin. I thought someone had updated it but the markings show "made in West Germany" and iirc the date was 1988. Unfortunatly the socket was too far gone with rust to be usable :( I was hoping to keep the original socket with the BMW logo.

I'll have to see how many pins my socket has in the morning, trouble is I've only got 12 fingers to count on :o
