Weld the diff /slam it / cover it in stickers / drink Redbull / drive around in circles et al, crack on. It is not as if you are ruining nice cars, they are generally scrap by the time you boys get them :)
This is precisely my point. Ive seen people on here frag much cleaner/rarer cars than we run just for a quick profit and scrap whats left, and you hypocrites still kick off every time someone fits a welder to one despite them being perfectly legal perfectly safe?

I used to love this place the banter and the knowledge used to be hilarious back when i had my E30. What the fuck happened to you lot?

Infact Pete you know im not just a drifter who has signed up here for a row as we have crossed paths on many a thread on here before and i respect you.

As for Andyboy, the understeeryness is down to cheap tyres. I've run cheap tyres on the front, and it's aweful, the present car has Parada Spec 2's on the front though, and I don't get understeer. But then, that's like a car with an open diff really isn't it?
What-ever.

Couldn't agree more. As for the safety aspect, a mate of mine was told by his driving instructor that the most dangerous part in a car was the "nut behind the steering wheel". He was referring to the driver but my mate took it literally and removed the nut behind the steering wheel. Crashed shortly afterwards... yes, I know it's an old one. Couldn't resist.

At the end of the day you know what you're doing. if you wind up upside down in a tescos carpark the fuzz won't give a shit about how legal you say your diff is.

Whilst people say that their welded diff is insured, have you got 'welded diff' in written in your wording? Without this if you smoosh your motor insurers will deny they know what a welded diff is and will ask where you purchased your 'locking differential'.

Nice like that.

Not really. He is still wrong.

And Rich318i. What the hell do you think you are doing? Swearing and using the kind of English found primarily on council estates is not helping get the point across? They might be wrong, but the majority here aren't cunts and do know what they are talking about 98% of the time. Im trying to have a reasoned debate and your just shitting all over it.

OK I'm wrong

Driftc0ck in insured and allegedly road legal matt black sh1tbox with welded diff allegedly declared to insurance company sideswipes a writes off a brand new Bentley on a wet roundabout.

Select option 1 or option 2

1) Insurance company shrug shoulders and get chequebook out

2) Insurance company tell their most senior engineer to go over matt black sh1tbox with fine toothcomb looking for any reason they can to void the policy and not pay

Err.......

If welded/locked/fixed diffs are so safe and such a good idea why are they not fitted as standard ? or as we all know how manufacturers love to charge extra for "performance" parts why are they not an extra cost option ?

You arent trying to have a reasoned debate - you're trying to promote the fact that in your opinion there is nothing wrong, legal or unsafe about welded diffs and when people don't agree with you for their own reasons whether they've driven a car with a welded diff fitted or not you don't like it.

I don't need to try one to know that I don't want one. There are plenty of zoners on here I concur with on this subject - 2 on this thread in particular - Andyboy literally wrote the book on E30's so I'd expect him to know what he's talking about, and pacerpetes owned and driven about a gazillion different turds so I'd also expect him to know a thing or two about it.

If you want to mig up your diff and try out your skillz on the public road thats up to you - just don't expect any sympathy if it all goes t1ts up if/when you crash

You are getting totally the wrong end of the stick here. At no point have i told anyone they should fit a welder to every E30 out there. I have not defended those who drive like a prick on the public highway (and lord knows there are plenty of them without welders) If you crash and lose your license doing that then you deserve all your getting and in sure as shit not saying that welding up your diff and insuring you car as standard is legal, it clearly is not. You are right, if that happens the bloke is a cock.

What im sick of getting told is a blanket, across the board lecture that welded diffs are illegal. They are not, correctly insured they are perfectly legal to drive on the road (Just like any modification, and there are numerous insurers that will cover them, not just locked diffs but actual welders) and they do have their place.

I hope you can see im not a 18 year old "Driftaaa innitttt" Im a sales exec at a non franchise dealer. I have no points on my license and do no condone driving like a dickhead on public roads (you get exactly what you deserve) and i have both a diploma and a degree in motorsport engineering. I assure you i cant afford to risk my license being a dick in Mcdonalds car park to impress 15 year old skanks (you will probably find these kind of chavs tend to have open diffs anyway) Ive been a zoner for years so i have not opened up and account just to have a row. Driving like a dick on the road is equally likely to get you in trouble/crash regardless of welded diff or not.

So no, i dont recommend a welder for anyones minty mint tec2 sport. But on the flip side, if someone wants to keep a crappy standard 325i running and out of the hands of the fraggers to use as a drift car then there is no reason why they cant weld their diff (As long as they insure properly)

Is that not fair?

PS: The reason to drive a welded diff on the road is not to drift on the road, It is because the car is still your daily driver or to get it to and from events without a transporter etc.

Hmm, im about to upgrade the diff on my track car to have 40% lock, this will obviously cost a few hundred, maybe I should just weld the **** and spend the money on part worn tyres, a couple of steelies and a crate of redbull?

If your track car wasnt worth much money, there are alot less fun ways to spend a weekend.

Assuming however that is it worth money, and your taking the mickey :td:

Fair play, if your just driving your car to a diffin eventz then yes get on with it, but most of the welda boys on here do it to drive sideways on the road and be part of a scene, I even had someone come and collect a load of parts from me in a shitheap sierra covered in stickers with a welded diff, roofrack and a trailer, I told him by no means he was not welcome to put his car on my gravel...

does a welded diff cause loss of traction when cornering?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differenti ... e)#Purpose

Now I'm not saying that you or anyone who chooses to use a welded diff is incapable of controlling their car - aka careless driving / not in proper control, but technically, if you, or a device attached to a motor vehicle causes, or initiates a loss of traction, the situation is deemed prosecuteable under UK traffic law.

The entire concept of welding your diff is counterintuitive to the function of a differential (obviously) and any defense for the use/requirement of a welded diff on a public road when presented with the road traffic act is completely preposterous.

A legal grey area, to which a definitive resolution will be defined at some stage I'm sure - however as soon as enough b-lends park their welded chariots backwards into a bus shelter crowded with pensioners, the world will begin to scratch scalps and catch on... Sadly this is the norm and it takes tragic loss to initiate a change in the law.

Picture this..

An inexperienced driver buys a rwd car, completely unaware that it has a welded diff and uses engine braking as he approaches a roundabout in wet weather.
