1. Secondry throttle diaphram assembly
6. Thermal valve
7. Does that go to the air filter housing ?

Pull the pipe off at 2 and you should get a slight suction, if your not sure put your hand over the top of the carb (venturi) for a second to block the air flow and the end of the pipe should grip your finger.

If not then remove the pipe and make sure it is clear and the tube at 4 is clear into the venturi.

Now with 2 back in place pull the pipe at 5 and see if you get suction with the engine stone cold and then again when hot.

i was thinking would the carb want tuning to the engine???
It possibly would if it came from a different capacity engine.
Weren't early ones 1600cc and later ones 1800cc (still badged 316)
all the carbs were 1800 cc

in regards to the relay
there should be a black box on the wing
take that off and inside it there should be a relay
im almost 100% certain that is the problem

had simular probs with my old one

got fed up in end so i just changed to the injection lump
gained 15 bhp for 100 notes as well lol

i dnt no much abou carbs but i would like to contribute

mymate has a 316 carb, he put some sort of webber on it which worked quite well, but that was nothing until he put twin dellortos on, i kid you not he was on par if not quicker than my mates 318i with filter and exhaust and no rear seats 8O

The moral of the story is, pierburg carbs in my experience (especially on my golf) are pieces of poo
