Just using a quality oil will help reduce the tap.

Have a look at a 5w-40 synthetic or even a decent 10w-40 semi.

Brand wise we rate Silkolene and Motul as tops.

No need, just using a good oil will give it a good clean.

Guy hi!

I'm Kiko from Porsche forums and client of yours (on Motul 300v) the thing is for the M3 E30 you recomend both the 5W40 and the 10W50 which is the criteria? Which one should I use? BTW what is the top, TOP range synthetic lubricant available for both the gearbox (known to be a bit nothchy when cold) and the lsd diff?

Cheers

Depends what you are doing with the car. If it sees ligh use and is in tip top condition then 5w-40 is fine. For hard used engines then go for the 10w-50, also if it is noisy or burns oil.

For the gearbox I believe an ATF is required (same gearbox as the Merc 190 cosworth?) The very best of these is the Amsoil Synthetic ATF.

Hi mate.
Would you be able to let me know which would be the best oil for my girlfriends 1990 jap import MR2 2L 16v GT ?(non turbo model)
It has only done 60,000 miles but the oil does need topping up once a month and there is definately not a leak. (burns about 1litre every 200miles)
I have been using halfords 10w40 part synthetic oil but it is due an oil change and i would like to use the best oil possible.
thanks

We would suggest 5w-40 full synthetic as the top option.

Brand wise, we rate Silkolene, motul and Fuchs.

Oilman

I've noticed you sell Castrol saf-xj? i really need some for my differential as it has a seeping gasket and BMW are reluctant to sell me a litre on its own.

How much is it shipped; and is there another oil i can use for an LSD or does it have to be castrol stuff?

Mr oilman, please could you recommend the oils that i would need for the following:

Engine
Gearbox
LSD

The above is for my 1989 325i sport with 115k.
The car is not used on tracks etc.........it just gets used as a 2nd car doing 4k to 6k a year.
Up to present it has been serviced by BMW main dealers. (using their oils)
Many thanks in advance :)

Ok, for the engine a good 5w-40 synthetic is the top option, or a 10w-40 semi as a cost option.

For the diff the Castrol SAF-XJ and for the gearbox, depends as you need to have a look what colour sticker is on the gearbox where it is filled up from, then I can find you a match.

5w-40 synthetic as a top option, or a 10w-40 semi as more of a cost option. With that kind of use with a synthetic an annual oil change will be ideal.

Hello, I'm new here with a rather well cared for 325i Touring in my possession. Its done 123,000 miles and I've got full service history with stamps in the book all the way through. However the last owner was a retired BMW mechanic and was a bit old fashioned so despite his meticulous care and attention he had with the car, he said he doesn’t like this "new thin oil" that cars run on and uses duckhams 20W50. Apparently that’s what good old fashioned motor mechanics teaches you.

Anyhow I'd like to change this out a little sooner than required especially with this cold weather! Am I fine to go straight from the thick stuff to a nice 5W40? No engine flush required as long as I get the oil up to temp first for it to drain out? Car is just for general personal use with the odd stretch of its legs and I don’t do many miles (less than 6,000 a year).

Also a question in general about the oil change, a mate of mine works for an autoparts centre and has given me a MANN oil filter for the job. Are these a quality product? It looks pretty good and is made in Germany. Or should I head down to BMW for an OEM part?

Finally a question to the forum as a whole; need I worry about getting a replacement sump plug and washer, and is this a trip to BMW? Is it anything special, magnetic etc?

Thanks.

No issues going from 20w-50 to 5w-40, just drain and replace and your engine will thank you for it :)

The Mann filter is fine.

Cheers

Hi Guys,

Need some help, I've got a ford Maverick 3.0 V6 and I will need a full service with all the liquids changed.
What can you recommend?
Also the ford recommends 5w-20 but your website only give me 5w-30. Is that ok?
The car will be used in cold temperatures around Europe this winter (-30 to -20c)

Thank you
Stefan
