I have juste made my first track day in Alés-France .

The car , 325i with 249.500 kms , Motul 300V 15w50 , now , 1950kms later 350km of them on the track , the engine is like a dream , smooth , taking the revs so easy , perfect temperature , low fuel consomption on motorway and moutain roads and , using only 3dl of oil .

Cheers Oilman , you advice is just the best !

Hi I just got in
Could someone tell me is Castrol formula SLX - Fully synthetic 0-30W is going to work on a 32o with 115k ?? I just bought 4 litres and wondered if this will work on my car...
The stealers told me that, with so many miles any quality fully synth oil would work well is that true ??
Thanks Jose

Hi,
I posted this yesterday, but got no answer, anyone has an idea of my question below... I believe in my car would be critical to its engine wear...

Im no expert but I think 30 doesn't give enough protection at high temperatures.

5w40 seems to be the recommendation given for most e30s

I am confused, the dealers said "having done so many miles your car is better off with any fully synthetic..." Why would this be ??
My car had covered 115k, does that mean the type of oil has to be carefully chosen now ??

115k is still a baby for a BMW so using a synthetic is fine.

Many people belive that a high mileage car cannot use synthetics, this is not true, synthetics or mineral oils are fine in your e30.

But synthetics are better from a quality perspective.

Hi oilman ... time for me to ask what you think the best oil is for me !
1986 2.5 litre M20 ... car has done 73000 kms since new and 2500 kms since I fitted a new head/cam etc. I live in Copenhagen where the winter temp can get to -12c . So living here means buying oil from you is a no-no but I would love to hear your recommendation. At the moment I am using Castrol TWT 10W-30 as this is what the dealer said was best for an "old" engine.
Thanks in advance ,

Due to the winter temps I would use a 5w-40 for better cold start flow and protection, you could even use a 0w-40.

Cheers

If you want the best and the engine is still on good repair then you will need a good 5w-40 full synthetic for all year round use.

For a selection, drop me a mail to sales@opieoils.co.uk

Hi,

The grade is fine with changes as often as that, if you were to do some endurance racing you may wish to use something slightly thicker like a 10w-50.

The Valvoline is OK stuff, its a pao synthetic, but better more stable ones are available such as the ester/pao blends. Esters assist the additive pack in a motor oil formulation because they are surface-active (electrostatically attracted to metal surfaces), so they help to reduce wear and friction.

They are fluid at very low temperatures and at high temperatures they are very chemically stable and have low volatility (donÔš't evaporate away).

They also help to prevent hardening and cracking of oil seals at high temperatures.

For a price list, drop me a mail to sales@opieoils.co.uk

Can you recommend an oil for a 64 000 m40 316i (1991) Been regularly serviced. I live in central london and probably do to many short journeys (in terms of mileage) for my own good. But also do long 300miles trips to north wales about 8 times a year, if this makes any difference.

If you could pm me prices with you recomendations that would be good!

Thanks

Hi,

You can go for a 10w-40 semi synthetic or the quality option, 5w-40 full synthetic.

I have plenty of good ones to choose from, have a look at my december offer.

Cheers

Hi would like you advice on the following
1) i am building a 2.7 eta / 731 head etc , eta had 99k on it , run it for 3 months , all ok , did compression and leak down tests all good, but, i want a cheap oil to start it up on after build , up to approx 100 mile )with after rebuild.

2) then a cheapest oil for the next 600 after build , +( are those engine flush additives any good ?) , or is hydraulic oil , or electrical transformer oil ok just to flush it though / clear it out with ? , not drive on )
3) good quality oil to run the rest of the time on ( will be fitting a 325 oil cooler , but not sure if they have a thermostat as std )
thanks for your time/ advice

Hi,

Ok, first up you can use one oil for the whole running in process.

Go for a 10w-40 semi synthetic, dont be fooled by the synthetic word here as the "synthetic" part is infact hydrocracked mineral oil, all you need is mineral based oil to run in so a semi will use better detergents anti wear/foam etc.

Once all running in is complete go for a good 5w-40 full synthetic for all year round use...... if it burns oil try a 10w-50 but all should be ok.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

what would you recommend for my e30 325i cab? cnat tell you the mileage as the engines been fitted from another car, sounds a little tappy up top been told could be the eccentrics?
Only gets used once a week if that, not raced much just std driving (posing) and not very often in winter. been sitting for 4 months and will be servicing her this week

would it be worth flushing her out too seeing as been sitting foir a while? owned her 67 months and came with no history alas

cheers in advance

For good value vs quality I would recommend Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40 fully synthetic.

4L = Ԛ£28.99
8L = Ԛ£48.49
16L = Ԛ£84.49

Quite some time ago I bought 25 litres of Castrol SMX-S for my Range Rover R380 gearbox and still have some left. I suspect it won't suit the open diff but would it be suitable to use in my 1990 320i gearbox?
Thanks,
Gordon

You can do, the SMX S is 75w-80, your car calls for a 75w-90 which would be the better more shear stable choice.

Simon (Oilman)

Why dont you speak to M5pilot about getting your oil products in the Zone Shop. Have a brief description for each grade, on say a budget oil, medium value oil and expensive oils.

Saves you answering the same questions over and over etc. Just an idea plus we can use our credit cards...... winkeye

Thanks for your advice on this matter, clearly no-one (not many members) have a scooby-doo on oils for their cars.

I would do but I have just spent a small fortune on my own shop to which users here have access to the Dicsounted Members Area so it would be better continuing to give advice for me.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk

We used to have an Oil Advice and Recommendations thread on this forum before it changed from the old E30 zone.

Perhaps the best idea is to start that again, sticky it and refer people to it when oil quaestions are asked that way we build up a FAQ on oil and people can look at what we recommend.

Cheers

hi oilman (guy or simon)

when topping up is it best to stick to similar oil (read identical) or is it not that important

i need to top up but not sure what bmw put in on its last service other than its semi synth

i only have a few thousand miles left before another service is due but it will need topping up by then, any recommendations

cheers

Ok,

All oils will mix, so if push comes to shove you can use anything, it just downgrades the better of the two oils.

If it has a semi synthetic in, it will be 10w-40 so any reputable brand 10w-40 semi will be ideal.

Naz,

Nice looking cab you have there

If you want the best, look at the ester based BMW approved Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 changed every 8k or so.
