Cars been running a little lumpy at tickover and when you pull away it runs flat and stunk of fuel from the exhaust .
Did the inlet manifold gasket tonight and cleaned all the throttle out and inlet manifold and icv , Put it all back together and it ticks over at 1,700 revs without any throttle cable attached 8O
Picks up reasonably well when driving but seems lazy responing to throttle , Any help appreciated guys :?

possibly the trottle posistion sensor but idling at 1700 would sould like the air inlet is leaking or idle control valve acting up

When it went into work it hunted really bad and with a full tank of fuel it did 159 miles 8O
Had to adjust the throttle up slightly otherwise it cut out all the time
Suspected inlet manifold
Now it runs as above , If i unolug the afm or icv it makes a difference so i take it there ok :?:

So farthis moring i have borrowed my mates icv and afm and make to difference at all , As before , Car ran ok before we did the work , No air leaks either :?
Ill see if i can nick his fuel pressure valve , Cant work out why it ticks over so high and really lumpy though , Car wont start again now as if its flooded .

Unlikely to be the ecu. Before you do anything else, check the blue temperature sensor.

It could be a TPS issue as well, but it sounds more like an air leak, blue temp sensor, AFM issue, in that order. Test the blue sensor first, then check again for leaks with WD40, or if your brave, propane.

Unplug it, and measure the resistance. Check it against this resistance/temp chart:

Ok- lets sum this up in one post...

Car running lumpy and smoking when revved.

Work carried out - Replaced Inlet manifold gasket.

Tried replacing/Cleaning

AFM (with known good)

ICV

Looks like car is overfuelling due to either-

unmetered air getting in

or possibly, air intake is restricted so car is overfuelling for air available?

Or Blue temp sensor is telling ECU the engine is cold when it's not = over fueling. Simple to test.

Replaced throttle body and tps known to be good and clicks , Replaced and cleaned afm , icv , Replaced fuel pressue regulator .
Work carried out previously was replace inlet manifold gasket .
Car still runs rich and a little hesitent when revved and slightly lumpy now , Will replace cold start sensor tomorrow as now dark

My ecu is ending in number 164 and the one ive pinched bits off is ending in 073 so take it that its not compatible ??
Also the cold start sensor makes no difference when unplugged .

Steve, have a look at the multi plug under the inlet manifold, the wiring for the coolant temperature sensor goes through it. the CTS is worth changing as it tells the ECU to keep the injectors open longer on cold starts.

Cheers david , I did clean that one up as well as others and know exactly which one you mean , Few of the terminals were a bit furry but not to bad . Cheers for the thought anyway :D

I suspect davidt is the closest to solving this! Check under the rubber cover of the lower half of this plug and socket.

The 164 is a slightly newer version of Motronic than the 073, but all the external stuff is the same.

This plug is the work of the Devil, it caused the only breakdown my car has ever had, for some reason water gets in and sits in the bottom half of the plug, so as Brian suggests check out under the rubber boot. but be careful if the connectors are corroded the wires may break off as it did on mine. I have now wrapped it in self amalgamating tape to keep it water
tight.

The plug and socket themselves aren't really necessary. There's no problem with removing it completely and soldering/ heat shrinking the wires together.

Went out tonight with a spare ecu to fit it at a local retail park , Nice lighting and nobody to annoy with the car running , I have elderly neighbours :o:
The ecus are different , Mine has 3 rows of pin and the other has 2 :?
About 3 miles from home the car started jumping about agin the died , 1" split in a fuel pipe :x
Tomorrow im gonna clean up that plug again , Change the blue sensor and replace all the rubber fuel lines
After that i will give up .... Not

Yes, you're right! You wrote 073; I read 173!
The 073 is a bit of a primitive device, and best avoided.

Specsavers brian
Right , Cleaned the plug out again under the inlet manifold so terminals were uber clean , New blue sensor and it ran better but not brilliant , Had a spare air flow meter and it made it a bit better but we think the screw had gone as it made little adjustment , Nipped in my bay at work and pulled out my original afm which i thought made it run rich , Cleaned it up and adjusted it on the car and it goes lik a flippin rocket now 8O
Thought it run well before so am very happy now 8)
Cheers for all the replys guys , Much appriciated , Think it was a mixture of a few things in the end , Will see how it goes in the morning but should be ok :D
