Help!!! my car is overheating and its not down to the crappy viscous fan. I know this much becuase i can hear the difference in engine tone when it is "locked" for cooling
and the coolant system itself has no blockages as it was recently flushed an re-filled
what other possibilities could it be? cheers to all in anticipation/hope/desperation

check the obvious stuff first, like the thermostat is opening (open rad cap when cold, start engine andwait for it to warm up, if the 'stat opens you'll see the coolant flowing thru the rad)
check for oil in water or water in oil. If you have either, could well be shagged head gasket. also check it has oil in it.

if you have recently refilled it i would check for air locks.

When does it overheat?
In traffic?
High motorway speeds?
All the time?
Heats up within 3mins of driving?

Exactly! Far more detail required.Gwynleym10 wrote:When does it overheat?

Sorry, was late when i posted (my excuse for lack of details
). it seems to do it all the time
even if i go for a 10 minute drive to the shops your can hear the exhaust creaking as it cools off, but it never seems to affect performance, temp guage not working but in the pipeline, just assuming this isn't right because my last car had no such issues

I very much doubt there is anything wrong with your car, except for the temp gauge!
What's the problem with it?

It just doesn't seem right that from a totally cold start, the exhaust gets hot enough to hear cooling after a very shoprt run
maybe its nothing but id rather fix it than assume its ok, will be checking thermostat tomorrow just to check

Im stuck in a 1.8 escort at the moment and thats the same, after 10 mins especially if its had a bit of stick you can hear the exhaust ticking (and strangely for a ford, all is well with the lump)..... as has been said by more knowledgable people than myself, you NEED! to know what the engine is upto, so you need to fix that temp gauge ASAP.
