Hi
If any one can point me towards a thread, or give me a clue, 1987 325i Cab, been sat for a couple of months (this is not unusual) usually fires up on turn of key, battery fully charged, but nothing turning over, can hear fuel pump, and a soft click from engine bay, but no turn over at all, should I try and bump start? Never happened before, always a first time starter

Second time today:Unscrew the cap on the diagnostic socket (high up on the front left of the engine), and identify pins 11 and 14. Mark them with tipex or white paint.
The next time the problem occurs, remove the cap again, and link together these two pins with a short piece of wire. This should engage the starter motor, so make sure the car is not in gear. If the ignition is on, the car should start.

It's a test! It's not supposed to be a cure.robbouk wrote:Thanks Brian, this dosnt seem to work, never mind, joined the two together, but still no turnover. Thanks again for your help, sounds like ANOTHER trip to the garage, am trying to sell the thing, guess it dosnt want to go!!!
Connect a 12volt 5W or 21W lamp between clean metal on the ENGINE and the terminal on the starter motor that has a 10mm nut (the middle sized one), then link the diagnostic pins again.
Does the lamp light?
Hi
The lamp lights wheather the diagnostic pins are linked or not, i have connected the lamp to the nut on the starter motor that has the thick red wire going to it, is this correct?

No! That's a 13mm nut.robbouk wrote:Hi

I wrote 10mm nut. Should be a black/yellow wire, but it may be sleeved.
Thanks Brian for your quick response, I'm not very "engine" literate, but I can see why it could get frustrating for you!!! I love the e30 very much, I have had 2, but cant wait to see he back of this pile of crap, can see myself paying to have it towed away at this rate
