Finger in the air.........

Has it got water in? Is the viscous fan working? Is the thermostat working? What does the radiator look like? Is the water pump working?

apparently it blew the top rad hose and dropped its coolant..

the water pump is ok supposedly, but its not circulating coolant

not mixing oil and water

Could be an airlock, could be a dodgy expansion tank cap. What makes you think it's not circulating water? Are the heaters cold? If they are, it's either an air lock, or knackered pump. I'd also be looking at the thermostat.

so its likely to be something cheap/easy if its not mixing oil and water?

everything on an m30 is cheap and easy, a new engine would cost £150-odd and a day to swap :D

seriously, this is a daft thread Dan, it could be anything. if the coolant really isn't going round it's perhaps thermostat/blocked rad/airlock/gas in coolant due to HG, but how is anyone to know without seeing it!

and in any case, even if the initial problem was 'cheap/easy', if it's been run without coolant circulation or whatever and cooked then it might be needing a lot more work, who knows.

the heads can crack, but it isn't m20b25-common.

so is it a mate's car or something you want to buy or what

yeah it is a little daft, but i just wondered if it was something common.. its not been run, its sat since it happened i believe

its in a car im looking to buy to get me about for a bit (still not got the 'other' one finished and not sure i can be assed with a manual conversion on the 323i outside..) just swapping a couple of bits on an engine seems less of a pita atm
