My E30 318 IS has now developed a noisy rear diff. I would like to change it for a LSD unit. Is this worth doing and are the ratios the same? I seam to be getting different answeres from people. What ratio did the 318IS have as standard?

Any help and advise is greatly appreciated guys.
Thanks

4.1:1, very hard to find LSD in that ratio.

Trento,
Yours is a 3.45:1 ratio. If you were to get a 325i LSD you would be getting a 3.91:1 which would give your car better acceleartion but a lower top speed. There are other LSD ratios out there as well so make sure you know what you are buying when you get it.

Good luck,

James

(Ooops :o: my mistake, I stand corrected... 4.1 it is, same as standard for 320i and 318i)

Standard ratio for 318is is 4.10. This is a small casing diff and very difficult to find a small casing LSD in this ratio. If the 325is diff is 3.91 or 4.10 ratio then it would suit but this is a large casing diff, but can be made fit by adjusting the prop shaft length. LSDs also require special oil, Castrol SAF-XJ, available from main dealers.
