Hi Gents, I'm going to the Nurburgring this summer and need to replace/upgrade my front discs and pads, but which ones ?.

I've been toying with the idea of GSF's Zimmermann cross drilled discs and Pagid fast road pads, BUT found that Rallydesign sell Maxtorq cross drilled and grooved discs for the same money. Does anyone have experience of Maxtorq ?

What are the advantages of grooved discs ?

Also, what about a goodridge 6 line hose kit and ATE superblue fluid ? I can get a good deal on the hoses but so far the superblue is looking really expensive.

Your advice is appreciated peeps

Cheers,

Iain T

wouldnt bother with cross drilled - they crack when they get hot.. tbh even grooved arent worth it...

BMW discs and Pagid/Mintex pads

I've been running zimmerman x-drilled for about 3 years now, great performance, and never had any problems, I've also been running them with the Pagid's.

i have used maxtorq pads on a 170 bhp mk2 RS2000, non vented disks (really!!!), small enough to fit in 13" wheels. i never had brake fade, ever. i've not used the disks but the pads really are good...!

i currently have ATE power disks (gay, flower style swirly grooves!) and mintex pads in my 325i tourer. i can cook, overheat and fade this setup on a B road in about 3-4 minutes!!! don't know if the disks make a lot of difference or maybe i'm just cooking mintex pads...

To be honest I swapped my front brakes to ATE power discs and Mintex 1144 pads, and im not that impressed at all. They fade really quickly.
My mates got the same pads on a different car, not grooved discs though, and he does track days and they haven't faded yet, he really rates them. So I can only put it down to the Power discs are cr@p.

ive micro fractured ebc turbo groove, killed 2 setc of red dot 20 groove, but ATE are hangin in there with only a few small stress cracks on them, i think its the harsh ferodo pads i use........ stops like a goodun though!

I've had Zimmermans, cross drilled and the pagid fast road pads for a few months now, was amazed the first time I planted my foot and still am today. You have to warm them up a little to start, but you get used to allowing a little extra when you first use them in the morning, but after that they'll make you hold on tight when you brake hard. I really don't know how I drove so fast with such crap brakes. Not used any of the other makes discussed so can't help with them.

i think the pagid pads are shit IMHO but for Ԛ£26 they are really good value for money and i would recommend them for daily driving.

i think they're 1144's.

another snippet of info that may help things... i used to have ATE power disks and paid fast road pads on a vw scirocco. this used to get massive brake fade too. the fade stayed when i changed to standard ferodo pads at a later date.

i personally think it's something to do with the ATE disks getting very hot and overheating the pads somehow... could be wrong though!

i think u r wrong regarding the ATE discs.... i believe a few racers use them too.....the simple fact is u do not gain or lose significant performance from a disc, the pads and fluid is where the noticeable performance comes from!!!! trust me!!!! ATE power doscs are fine and help deglaze the pads.... i neither gained or lost performance on swithching from ebc turbogroove to ate. i hace ferodo 3466 compound the whole time...... however both sets of discs do have little cracks on them, but this is as a result opf the pads which are very harsh

maybe i'm just very hard on my brakes then... that said, i've only ever faded brakes with ate disks on cars with standard engines!

hello, on the total bmw issue of march 2002 on the 2002 turbo article there is a brake conversion that sounds interesting. there is a combination of 635 calipers with sierra disks.
indeed the disks can be adapted to use them on the e30 as well. I bought 633 4 pot calipers, but they are extremely heavy so I hasitate to use them. any ideas?

i'm looking at upgrading my brakes. i want disks and calipers, ideally getting bigger disks. the only kit i found so far is wilwoods. this is the calipers 280mm disks and pipe work. come to about 520. bit pricey for 20mm more.

any1 any other big brake and caliper kit ideas?

 ATE powerdisks with red dot pads does the job for me.
Keep away from the EBC green stuff.

If your flogging it at speed constantly on the track, remember when you get to the pits dont leave your foot on the brake, this I am told can warp or fracture the disks.

Presumably the same when you get to the lights after a fast session.

Shelle- try http://www.rallydesign.co.uk they have 2 wilwood e30 kits for Ԛ£345 or Ԛ£399 +vat.

Nikos- I'd be wary of fitting mega heavy calipers :?

thank you Iain,
I just called Corlan from ava turbo who did the concersion 2 years ago, and told me that with a strong pair of brackets I wont have trouble.
I have allready bought the calipers through mail from pelican parts is usa, so I didnt have a clue about how much they would weigt.
if things work I let you know because is very economical mod .
imagine that the 2 calipers -4 pot- cost 190 us dollars plus pp, sierra rotors 100 pounds and another 100 pouns for the brackets and you should see the pistons of the calliper

go to http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ppe ... ke+Caliper

The pad will burn it self onto the disk, leaving an imprint of the face of the pad, which will cause a warping type of effect. But this can be fixed by grinding the metal down, but with that sort of cost you might as well buy new disks. Also this should also be followed when using new pads.

pads are mintex M1144's. fluid unknown make DOT5. it's definately a pad fade rather than a soft pedal from boiling fluid.

could it be a strange effect of my ABS? the extra weight of the touring? maybe just down to how particular disks and pads work together...
