i just got a 89 320i and there is lots of throw in the gearbox , when its in gear it still feels like its in neutral .. so im getting a short shifter even tho i hate them but i figured if there this much movement then with one it might make it feel normal

now my problem is funds and cant afford a very good reputable one for 80-120 so i was on ebay and came across this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-Short-Shifter ... dZViewItem

how does this work , it looks pretty much like a metal block with 2 holes drilled in to it and aparently reducing the throw up to 60%... i read how it works but just cant see how it can ...

anyone used one of these or have any suggestiond for a good one thats cheap ??

thanks

I have one of these on the 2.7.You do need to make certain that all play caused by worn bushes is eliminated as well. The ebay gadget works well,it reduces stick throw by a large amount.'er indoors will not let me fit one to the 316i touring because she finds 'the gears stiff on your car'....but she only uses it around the city, mostly with a cold gearbox. When it is due a gearbox oil change,I will try ATF....

Precisely. If you 'hate' short shifters, why not fix the actual problem rather than fitting one?! It's just a couple of quids worth of bushes! :)

i didn realise u could just change the bushes but surely thats goin to be a fairly time consuming job ????

only other times i have used short shifters is when the car has a good box and then one has been put in , constantly seemed to be mis-shfting as they were all far to close , so changing from 3rd in to 2nd instead of 4th when u on the track just on the limiter isnt a safe or good thing
