i just got myself a stupidly clean 320i M20 E30
couple of things i need answering so i thought this is the best place
it drives bloody nicly but when i accelerate slowly it starts to stutter slightly but if i floor it it doesnt ? the previous owner told me that the fuel pump gave in last month and when he called the RAC guy out h said all the rac did was ta the fuel tank wiht a rubber mallet and it started no problem s, he sad he has dont this a couple fo times in the last month and its always started ...... any clues ??
also the gear stick has huge amounts of play and if im in 5th and low revs and accelerate i hear a thumping bass like sound and growling noise .. si that gearbox or maybe something else ??? only does it in 5th and in low revs
thanks very much

na mines nto doin wat yours is doin
mine idles fine and doesnt hunt but low down and light acceleration it stutters but not badly , no misfire just stutters a lil
now and again it wont start so i have to bash the underneith of the petrol tank and it starts fine after that

Almost definitely the fuel pump is dying. It'll respond to bashing for a week or so, but eventually will leave you stranded somewhere!
The stuttering could be a number of things, but first check the big air hose between the air filter/meter and throttle body for splits and cracks.

thanks Brianmooooooooooooore
i'll try the nissan one in there and if not then i might have a 325i one lined up .. if the stuttering isnt cleared then i'll check wat u said then start eliminating things like leads, plugs, dizzy etc etc and go form there
thanks for your help people

I doubt if the stuttering is anything to do with the fuel pump.
There might not even be just one cause for this, as the M20B20 runs fairly lean as standard, only just short of stuttering as normal.

thanks again ... i had a quick look at the hoses and didnt see any cracks, it was dark tho, but im getting an induction kit very very soon so will pull it all off and have a proper inspection .. if they run fairly lean i might look in to some bigger injectors to over come that ... maybe from a 325 or even 535 if they fit

are the plugs, dizzy cap & arm looking in OK condition?
If it's a 320 I wouldn't bother with all the bigger injector malarky etc, fit a 325 throttle body and inlet plenum first. Also a chip from Ant may well get rid of flat spots

yeah they look all ok but i havent opened the cap up to check the contacts, might give that a good clean and see.. the 325 pelmun and chip sounds expensive haha im kinda hoping to keep things in the " pocket change " range but thanks for the advice , if the cheap ways dont fix the problems then i will look in to chipping it and doin a bit on the engine
ajm- hmmm i shall also look in to that to see if i can spot an arch or something ... but it only does it if im plodding along , if i floor it its all ok so im thinking def a fuel prob

The induction kit will probably lose power for you and is unlikely to help with your problemcefiro_drifta wrote:thanks again ... i had a quick look at the hoses and didnt see any cracks, it was dark tho, but im getting an induction kit very very soon so will pull it all off and have a proper inspection .. if they run fairly lean i might look in to some bigger injectors to over come that ... maybe from a 325 or even 535 if they fit
Fitting incorrect injectors will mess it right up unless the electronics are remapped to go with them.
There are many possible causes for your problem, and they are all related to OE parts being out of spec. Fitting aftermarket/incorrect parts is not the way to solve your problems.
A good analysis of the problem, investigative fault finding, and the replacement/repair of faulty parts, is.
Even if you intend to tune your car, the first step is to get it into perfect running order in OE form.
