Starting problems with semi-hot engine

Hi all,

I drive around for aprox 15 minutes, switch off the engine, try to start it 10 minutes later and it just turns over for a long time without starting.

There are no problems with the start if the engine is either cold or hot. Only when it is somewhere in between...

Has anybody got a clue where to begin to look for the fault?

I have a 316i 1988 with an M10 engine
